Mohanlal’s much-anticipated blockbuster ‘L2: Empuraan’, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is all set to make its OTT debut — and it’s arriving sooner than fans expected. The high-octane sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer hit theatres on March 27, 2025, and quickly shattered multiple records.
A Record-Smashing Journey
From day one, L2: Empuraan made waves across Malayalam cinema. The film scored a massive ₹67 crore worldwide opening, the highest in Malayalam film history. It didn’t stop there — it became the first Malayalam film to cross ₹100 crore overseas and has now raked in over ₹260 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
OTT Release Date and Platform
The action thriller will begin streaming on JioCinema (Jio Hotstar) from April 24, less than a month after its theatrical release. Fans can watch it in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. However, there’s still no official update on the release of the Hindi-dubbed version.
Controversy Before Streaming
The film wasn’t without its share of backlash. A scene referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots sparked political controversy and led to calls for a boycott by Hindutva groups in Kerala. Responding to the uproar, the filmmakers issued a public apology and announced that a re-censored version with 24 cuts will be the one released on OTT platforms.
Power-Packed Star Cast
L2: Empuraan boasts a stellar cast including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Indrajeet Sukumaran, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and international faces like Jerome Flynn and Eric Ebouani, among others.
With high drama, political thrill, and an ensemble cast, L2: Empuraan is ready to take the OTT world by storm — mark your calendars for April 24.
