Raanjhanaa star Dhanush has emerged victorious in a copyright case against Netflix India. The Madras High Court has dismissed Netflix’s petition regarding the use of a 3-second clip from his film in Nayanthara’s documentary without consent.

The Legal Battle Begins

In November 2024, Dhanush filed a case against Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan, and their production house, Rowdy Pictures Pvt Ltd. He alleged that a clip from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan was used in Netflix’s documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, without proper authorization.

Dhanush’s Initial Warning Ignored

Dhanush had initially issued a 24-hour warning to Netflix to remove the clip. When his demand was not met, he pursued legal action. Last week, the court postponed Netflix’s plea, ultimately ruling that Netflix had no right to file a suit over copyright matters.

Nayanthara’s Defense

In response to the allegations, Nayanthara stated that permission had been sought and granted for using BTS footage, not the actual film clip. Despite this, Dhanush issued a legal notice demanding ₹10 crore in damages.

Past Controversies

This isn’t the first time Nayanthara has faced legal hurdles. In 2023, her film Annapurna was banned on Netflix due to controversies.

With the court’s recent decision, Dhanush has reinforced the importance of respecting creative ownership. This verdict serves as a reminder of the legal boundaries in the entertainment industry.
