Dance Scene in ‘Chhaava’ Removed After Backlash
The much-anticipated period drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, faced controversy ahead of its February 14 release. A dance sequence in the film drew sharp criticism from the Maratha community, prompting the film’s makers to take swift action and remove the scene.

Minister Uday Samant Confirms Removal
Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant addressed the media, confirming the removal of the controversial scene. “The producer and director have respected the sentiments of the Maratha community by removing the sequence. If the demand was genuine and has been met, there’s no reason for further objections,” said Samant. He also expressed gratitude to the filmmakers for their prompt response.

What Sparked the Outrage?
The controversy arose after the release of Chhaava‘s trailer, in which Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna (playing Maharani Yesubai) were seen dancing with a traditional instrument called the ‘Lezim.’ This depiction offended members of the Maratha community, who accused the filmmakers of distorting historical facts.

The Lezim, deeply rooted in Maharashtra’s cultural traditions, holds a symbolic significance. Critics argued that portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in a dance sequence with the Lezim diminished his historical dignity.

Protests and Demands for Correction
Protests erupted in Pune, including at a historic Maratha palace, with community members demanding corrections to the film. They insisted that the portrayal was an insult to the legacy of Sambhaji Maharaj and urged the filmmakers to respect historical accuracy.

Filmmakers Respond to Community Concerns
Acknowledging the backlash, the filmmakers decided to remove the dance scene entirely. This decision has been widely appreciated by community leaders and government officials.
