On the 15th of August, South Indian superstar Chiyaan Vikram delivered a stellar performance at the box office with his much-anticipated film, Thangalaan. While Bollywood released three major films—Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, and Vedaa—Vikram’s Thangalaan emerged as a formidable contender, surpassing the combined earnings of both Akshay Kumar’s and John Abraham’s films.
Thangalaan had generated significant buzz even before its release, making it one of the most talked-about Kollywood films of the year. Vikram’s extensive promotional efforts ensured a strong market presence, resulting in impressive advance bookings.
Opening Day Box Office Collection
According to Sacnilk reports, Thangalaan raked in a remarkable ₹12.6 crores on its first day. The regional breakdown of the earnings includes ₹11 crores from Tamil Nadu, ₹1.5 crores from Telugu-speaking regions, and ₹0.1 crores from Malayalam-speaking areas. The film is expected to see a significant surge in collections over the weekend, with initial estimates suggesting it could have reached ₹13-14 crores on its opening day.
Outperforming Bollywood Rivals
Thangalaan secured the second spot on the list of highest-grossing films released on Independence Day, just behind Stree 2. Meanwhile, Khel Khel Mein managed to collect ₹5 crores, and Vedaa garnered ₹6.5 crores—both of which together fall short of Thangalaan’s impressive earnings.
In addition to Vikram, Thangalaan features a stellar cast, including Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathi, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and others in pivotal roles. The film is based on a true story, shedding light on the lives of workers in the Kolar Gold Fields of Karnataka.
